Frequently Asked Questions
Most frequent questions and answers
Who do you teach?
What should I expect at the first lesson?
Your teacher will spend the first several lessons getting to know you, understanding your musical interests, evaluating your current skills, and developing a personalized learning plan. As the teacher-student relationship grows, lessons become increasingly tailored to your individual goals and learning style.
Do you offer trial lessons?
We do not offer single trial lessons. Finding the right teacher is about much more than one lesson. Before enrollment, we take time to learn about each student’s age, personality, musical interests, goals, learning style, and scheduling needs. We then thoughtfully match each student with the teacher who we believe will help them thrive.
Building a meaningful teacher-student relationship takes time. We encourage families to commit to at least one to three months of lessons before deciding whether to discontinue lessons or request a teacher change. This allows both the student and teacher time to build trust, establish routines, and develop a clear understanding of the student’s strengths and goals.
If, after that time, we feel another teacher would be a better fit, we’re happy to discuss a transition. Our goal is always to find the best long-term match for each student.
Lessons & Membership
How often are lessons?
Most students attend one private lesson each week. We recommend consistent weekly instruction to encourage steady progress and build long-term musical skills. With instructor approval, adult students may choose a bi-monthly lesson schedule.
How does membership work?
Membership reserves a recurring weekly lesson day, time, and teacher. It also includes access to the studio community, performance opportunities, and other enrichment experiences offered throughout the year.
Is there a long-term contract?
No. Membership is offered on a month-to-month basis. If you decide to discontinue lessons, simply submit the required cancellation request by the 20th of the month to cancel auto-pay.
Do you offer online lessons?
Yes. Online lessons are available and are conducted through our secure Student Portal. Bay Area students are encouraged to attend regular in-person lessons whenever possible.

Practice & Instruments
Does my child need a piano at home?
Yes. Students should have either an acoustic piano or an 88-key weighted digital piano to support consistent practice and long-term success.
How much should students practice?
Practice expectations vary by age and level. Your teacher will provide individualized assignments and guidance. Consistent, focused practice is far more valuable than occasional long practice sessions.
Do I need to purchase books?
Yes. Students are responsible for purchasing the music and materials recommended by their teacher.
Attendance
What happens if I miss a lesson?
Students may request a makeup lesson through the Student Portal, subject to teacher availability and the studio’s makeup policy. Complete details are provided in the Studio Handbook for enrolled families.
Can I switch to an online lesson if my child is sick?
Whenever possible, yes. If your student is feeling well enough to participate but should remain home, we are happy to teach the lesson online when advance notice is provided.
Performances & Community
Do students perform?
Yes! Throughout the year, students have opportunities to participate in studio concerts, workshops, masterclasses, festivals, and community events. Participation is encouraged as an important part of musical growth.
Are performances required?
Performances are always optional, although we strongly encourage students to participate whenever possible. Performing helps build confidence, stage presence, and artistic expression.
Studio experience
Where is Opus38 Studio located?
Opus38 Studio is located at 1139 Howard Street in San Francisco’s South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood. The studio offers convenient access from both Highway 280 and Highway 101 and is located two blocks south of Market Street.
Can parents stay during lessons?

How do I communicate with the studio?
Enrolled families have access to the Student Portal for scheduling, lesson information, announcements, and studio communication. You can also reach us by email with any questions.
Where can I read the complete studio policies?
Enrolled families receive the Opus38 Studio Handbook during registration, and the current handbook is available year-round through the Student Portal.
